I know several aritsts who spend time overseas, and they are not multilingual. However, it’s not a bad idea to be able to speak a couple of languages well enough to carry on a basic conversation. Educated Europeans often speak a second or third language, but they will be pleased if you can manage a European tongue.Dutch is not spoken outside of the Netherlands, and I’ve never met a Dutch person who doesn’t speak stellar English (and often some other languages) for that very reason. German is spoken in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, however, so it wouldn’t be a bad choice. My favorite language is Italian, but a lot of Italians, especially in the art world, can speak French (and English).French and German, in my view, would stand you in good stead.
